    About

Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights in Burma. She won the election in Burma in 1990, but the military overruled the result. From 1992 onwards, the radio station Democratic Voice of Burma broadcast to Burma on shortwave from NRK's broadcasting station at Kvitsøy outside Stavanger. Suu Kyi was mainly under house arrest from 1989 to 2010. Suu Kyi again won the elections in 2015 and 2020, but a military coup deprived her of elected power in 2021. Since then, she has once again been imprisoned.
