What did Mandela do to help launch the shortwave radio broadcast in Stavanger?
Nelson Mandela gave the crucial concession to the Stavanger-based shortwave radio station at the time when he was elected President in South Africa.
The radio project was co-founded and supported by the media & human rights organization; Worldview Rights.
Erik Bye was one of the journalists who was co-founding Radio Kudirat.
Nelson Mandela served as the democratic leader and President of South Africa in the period; 10.mai 1994-14.06 1999.
During the same period 5 African journalists were offered to serve as journalists and where secretly housted in a house in Stavanger at Tananger. They used the radio-studio and facilities at “Radio west”. (NRK url) as their radio-studio. Two hour broadcast was produced and broadcasted on a daily basis, which in turn was repeated four times a day . It was estimated by Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka that approximately 12 million listeners in Nigeria listened to the station on a daily basis.
Worldview Rights organized and administrated the Norwegian financial support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Radio as well as from the Oluf Palme foundation. They dis also channel their financial support from Stockholm via the Worldview Rights foundation located in the third floor of “Ankertorget” .
