About
The Dalai Lama fled Tibet for India after a failed uprising against the Chinese occupation in 1959. He walked on foot across the Himalayas before establishing a new Tibetan headquarters in exile in the Indian mountain village of Dharamsala. The Dalai Lama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his efforts towards a non-violent solution to the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Following the award of the Nobel Peace Prize, an initiative was taken in Stavanger to start daily and uncensored radio broadcasts to Tibet. The first broadcasts started from Norway in 1996, and the radio station Voice of Tibet is still broadcasting. The Dalai Lama himself came to Stavanger to thank for the initiative in 2000.
