About
Lawyer Shirin Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for her efforts to promote democracy and human rights in Iran. Ebadi has been particularly committed to women's and children's rights. As a Muslim, she has maintained that there is no contradiction between Islam and fundamental human rights. In 2009, she was forced to leave Iran and has lived in exile ever since. Irrespective of Ebadi, Stavanger has also been strongly committed to human rights in Iran. In the 1990s, a free radio channel to Iran was organized from Stavanger, but the actual production of the broadcasts was done in London due to security considerations.
